SPIT Project
Young people and children, Involving the community
SPIT denotes a form of spoken word commonly featured in a form of music called "urban grime." The project aims to address issues of interest & concern to local young people whilst providing new opportunites & teaching new skills. Subjects include the problems of gun & knife culture, crime amongst young people, teenage pregnancy, sexual health & drugs. The project aims to empower young people in combatting the frequent negative media images of youth through music & spoken word.
The project started in November 2007 and involves local young men aged 16-17. The most recent example involved 8 young men from the Fernleigh Close area, one with a long history of deprivation and few opportunities for young people to express themselves. The project encourages the participants to be actively involved in every aspect of the project's development and delivery. Most importantly, the project encourages young people to see themselves as part of the solution to the various problems they have identified in their communities.
This project was funded by the Local Network Fund, Octavia Foundation and Harrow Road Partnership.
