Learn2Earn: One service user's story

Learn to Earn

"I’m a 38 year old recovering alcoholic and addict. Although I’m now 4 months substance free I have found that I’m still continuing with unhealthy behaviours – I spend a lot of time sitting alone in my flat. This is where Learn2Earn comes in.

My primary goals in attending the programme are to end my self-imposed isolation, and bring a little structure to my week. I’ve made a promise to myself that I will attend every day for the 12 week duration. Whilst this may not seem like a big deal to many, for me it’s life changing. I can’t remember the last time I ever actually completed something. I start off with child-like enthusiasm and grand plans to revolutionise my life. Things are great. For a bit. Then, as sure night follows day, my enthusiasm wanes and I give up.

Part of the course is learning to set SMART goals and this is where I’ve previously been going wrong. My plans to change the world (and myself) weren’t realistic. I’ve been trying to run a marathon without even being able to stand up unassisted. I set my first SMART goal without even realising it – attend the programme every day. It’s specific, measurable, achievable, time-bound and, crucially, realistic. I’m proud of myself because I’m doing it.

What I didn’t expect is the way other things have seemed to fall into place. Jobs, courses, friendships and opportunities all because of the promise I made – to leave my house three mornings a week and walk to Acorn Hall. Simple."
