Case Study - Telka Chambers

After being out of work for two years, Telka found a job through the Octavia Foundation and the Westminster Works programme and is now a Customer Service Officer at Octavia Housing, a local housing association.

Telka, who lives in Queen's Park, explains how it helped kickstart her career.

“I had some previous work experience in reception and administration but had been out of work for two years after having my second child.  I had always wanted to work in housing but lacked the experience that I needed to get a job in this sector. " 

“I decided to approach the Octavia Foundation's Employment Advisor, Wray Bennett, for help in gaining work experience.  We met to discuss what skills and experience I wanted to gain as a volunteer and came up with an action plan to help me achieve my goals."

"I was given a three month work placement as an administrator with the Octavia Housing. This experience was vital and although I had both time constraints and financial pressures, I would say to anyone looking for a job that this is a great way into paid work and worth the short-term sacrifice.
